Melasma home care: sunscreen, skin irritation and your next appointment

A daily routine is part of managing melasma. Before buying another brightening product, write down what you already use and what you want to ask your dermatologist.

Check your sun protection

Choose broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. A tinted product containing iron oxide also helps protect against visible light, which can worsen melasma. Apply before going outdoors and reapply at least every two hours outdoors, following the product directions after swimming or sweating. Use shade and a wide-brimmed hat as well.

Notice irritation

Burning or stinging is a reason to review your routine, not proof that a product is working. Irritation can darken patches. Choose gentle, fragrance-free products and ask your dermatologist about products that irritate your skin.

Bring a useful record

Bring product names, prescription details and a record of earlier treatments. Note when the patches started and whether your routine has changed. Ask:

  • Does my diagnosis explain all the patches?
  • Which products should I keep, and which should I discuss changing?
  • What improvement is realistic, and when should we review progress?
  • What will ongoing care cost?

Plans often combine sun protection and prescribed skin treatments; a procedure is sometimes added. There is no single best treatment for everyone. Do not choose a peel or laser solely from someone else’s results.
