Chemical Peels 101: What They Really Do for Your Skin (And Who They’re Right For)

If you’ve spent any time researching skin treatments, you’ve probably come across “chemical peels” more than once. They’re one of the most trusted, time-tested treatments in dermatology — but also one of the most misunderstood. Are they painful? Do they “burn” your skin off? Are they safe for Indian skin tones? Let’s clear up the confusion.

What Is a Chemical Peel, Really?

A chemical peel uses a controlled acid solution to remove damaged outer layers of skin, encouraging fresh, healthier skin to take its place. It sounds dramatic, but in trained hands, it’s a precise, well-studied procedure — not the aggressive “peeling off your face” image many people imagine.

The Three Types of Peels

Not all peels are the same, and the right one depends on your skin concern and how much downtime you can afford.

Superficial peels (often called “lunchtime peels”) use mild acids like glycolic or lactic acid to gently exfoliate the outermost skin layer. Ideal for dullness, mild uneven texture, and light acne marks, with little to no visible peeling and healing in about 3–7 days.

Medium peels use stronger agents like trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to reach the outer and middle skin layers. These are more effective for sun damage, moderate pigmentation, and finer lines, but come with more noticeable peeling and a recovery window of roughly 7–14 days.

Deep peels penetrate further still and are reserved for more significant concerns like deeper wrinkles or scarring. They require closer medical supervision and a longer recovery — often 2–3 weeks or more — and are used far less commonly than superficial or medium peels.

What Can a Peel Actually Improve?

When matched correctly to your skin, a chemical peel can help with dull, tired-looking skin and uneven texture; mild to moderate acne and clogged pores; sun-induced pigmentation and dark spots; post-acne marks and superficial scarring; fine lines and early signs of aging; and, in select cases, melasma with careful, supervised protocols.

A Word on Skin Tone — Why This Matters More in India

Here’s the part that often gets skipped in generic skincare articles: not all skin responds to peels the same way. Darker skin tones (which cover the vast majority of the Indian population) carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) if a peel is too strong, poorly timed, or not followed by proper aftercare. This isn’t a reason to avoid peels — it’s a reason to have them done by someone who understands your skin type specifically.

At Monaris, every peel is chosen and calibrated around your Fitzpatrick skin type, your specific concern, and your skin’s healing history — not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

What to Expect After Your Peel

Aftercare is where most of the results are actually won or lost. Cleanse with cool water and a gentle, soap-free cleanser — avoid scrubbing. Keep skin consistently moisturized while it heals. Broad-spectrum sunscreen is non-negotiable, since freshly treated skin is significantly more sensitive to UV damage. Resist the urge to pick at any flaking or peeling skin — let it shed naturally. And avoid other active ingredients like retinoids or strong acids until your skin has fully recovered, unless your dermatologist advises otherwise.

Is a Chemical Peel Right for You?

If you’re dealing with dullness, pigmentation, mild scarring, or just want a refresh in your skin’s texture and tone, a peel might be a great fit — but the right peel depends entirely on your skin, not a generic routine you found online. A proper consultation looks at your skin type, sensitivity, and goals before recommending strength, frequency, and aftercare.
